Drone OrthoPhoto Maps and 3D Mapping
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, or Drones, have become inexpensive tools for not only high quality aerial video and photography, but also spectral and topographic mapping.
Specific photogrammetry algorithms, and also LiDAR sensors and georeferencing solutions have been developed for lightweight Drone platforms.
We have used Drones for:
1) 2D and 3D mapping of forest stands, cutblocks, landforms, and buildings and infrastructure;
2) oblique aerial photography to support engineering design and planning;
3) engineering project repeat video for project evolution tracking;
4) overhead shots of cemeteries for inventory purposes;
Satellite Imagery and Topography
XYINTEL is a sales partner of SI Imaging Services, the exclusive representative of the KOMPSAT series from the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).
The number of Earth imaging satellites with very-high-resolution cameras has gone up immensely in the past two decades. Advantages of satellite imagery over Drone imagery include: no field work; wide coverage at consistent resolution; cost-effectiveness.
FSP Maps, Referral Maps, Cruise Plan and Final Cruise Maps, Appraisal Maps, Site Plan Maps: some of the mapping deliverables often required for the licensing of logging operations in Crown land.
At XYINTEL, we use mapping templates that respect Ministry requirements but with simplification in mind. But we will also work with you to define your own template, with your logo, layers of interest, and preferred design.
There are other mapping products that, while not mandatory, are useful tools in cublock design. Those include viewshed maps, slope direction and gradient maps, and pre-layout stand quality maps based on aerial/satellite imagery.
Logging companies apply for Cutting Permits, Road Permits, Licenses, etc. through the Ministry's Electronic Submission Framework. The XML files to be uploaded are often generated through expensive and overly complicated software.
We prepare the required XML files and make the submissions on behalf of clients. We combine opensource GIS with free XML editing tools to simplify the XML generation process. We can show you how to do this in-house.

Log Hauling Cycle
Hauling distance/time is one of the factors in the calculation of the stumpage rate that licensees need to pay to the Ministry for logging on Crown Forest Management Area.
Calculating the cycle time requires combining: on-block road location; location of currently tenured roads; and required road permits.
Road types and IDs are then used against a speed chart provided by Natural Resource Districts for calculating hauling time based on road section length. Cutblock volume is used to weigh travel times from each block to the common junction.
We have a template in place that simplifies the calculation and can be directly submitted to the Ministry as part of Appraisal submissions.
Landforms and Terrain Stability
Map the susceptibility to different types of land surface instabilities based on statistical models combining the location of historical instabilities with surface geology and topographic information.
Combine that information with data on triggering factors.

Fluvial landscapes and modeling
The geometry of drainage basins and river longitudinal and transverse profiles are important components for flooding predictive mapping.

Land remote sensing: permafrost
SAR interferometry (InSAR) allows to detect and potentially track centimetric to sub-centimetric movements in the ground surface.
InSAR is today widely used to track slow-moving landslides, urban ground movements, volcanoes, earthquake deformation patterns, etc.
We have tested InSAR for measuring ground surface movement induced by ground ice deformation and permafrost creep in the Antarctic Peninsula.
Surveying contract management
XYINTEL works with surveyors in BC's North to perform engineering-surveys across BC's North. Surveyors benefit from XYINTEL's Drone capabilities, image processing, and Mapping. Drone imaging informed by engineering grade positioning is increasingly used for faster and more comprehensive topographic surveying of 1) construction sites, 2) mines, and 3) land surface instabilities.
